Grand National Jockey: Paul Townend

Paul Townend from Midleton in County Cork is a Grand National jockey from Ireland. This jockey has been working for Willie Mullins ever since he entered the horse racing world. He still rides for the stable of this trainer. This 29-year old jockey managed to be the best jockey at the Mullins when Ruby Walsh retired.

Career

If we are talking about National Hunt racing and Willie Mullins jockeys, the name that currently stands up the most is certainly Paul Townend. At the beginning of his career, Townend was an apprentice flat racing jockey. His first win was with The Chip Chopman in 2007.

Paul Townend Grand National jockey managed to be the jump racing Champion Jockey for two consecutive seasons in Ireland, in 2010 and 2011 cast a spotlight on himself in Grand National circles. In 2017, on the festival finals, this Irish jockey won the County Hurdle and the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle. He rode Arctic Fire and Penhill during those two. Almost ten years later, he did the same for the season of 2018 and 2019.

Furthermore, this Grand National jockey brought honour to his trainer, Willie Mullins, by winning the 2019 Cheltenham Gold Cup. It was the first Cheltenham Gold Cup trophy for the Mullins yard. Townend was riding Al Boum Photo and reached the success that no Mullins’ rider achieved for almost two decades.

Paul Townend Grand National hockey had a lot of success riding 2019. During the same week when he won the Cheltenham Gold Cup, he won the Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase. In this race, he rode on Duc Des Genievres.

Trivia

During 208, Paul Townend and the racing star Al Boum Photo had and an incident at Punchestown. To clarify, both the horse and the jockey steered away from the main course just at the final fence. This incident later left the popular jockey with a 21-day ban as his riding was described as dangerous. Moreover, this Punchestown festival incident was quite bizarre as the due was about to win the Grade One Growise Champion Novice Chase.

After a quite a good race, right at the final fence, Paul Townend Grand National jockey led Al Boum Photo to the right. It all looked like they were trying to avoid an obstacle, but there was no obstacle on the track. The horse crashed and dislodged the jockey.
